apron dress Emma

Attention girl moms! Are you as crazy about muslin as we are? When you see this cute little muslin dress with ruffles, you'll find it hard to keep your hands off the fabric!

The pattern is designed for sizes 92 to 104 and for non-stretch fabrics.
The pattern is actually designed like an apron. You can wear it over another dress but also over jeans or leggings.
You can of course also sew it as a dress - with closed side seams.
Note: Dear sewing mamas, please don't be surprised! The dress in the picture has a round neckline and a slit at the back. To make sewing less complicated, we decided on a V-neckline at the front and back when creating the pattern.

What do you need?

  • Sewing thread in matching color
  • scissors
  • pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Fabric consumption: Viscose, muslin, linen or light denim

Transfer the templates to the fabric. Draw 1 cm seam allowances all around and cut out all parts.

The seam allowances for the ties and ruffles are already included in the pattern.

Sewing instructions:

Place part A on part D of the outer fabric, right sides together and sew the shoulder seams together. Press the seams open.

2 x: Place part B on part C from the outer fabric, right sides together and sew the shoulder seams together. Press the seams open.

Repeat the same for the pieces from the inner fabric.

Place the middle piece from the outer fabric (A+D) onto the middle piece from the inner fabric, right sides facing, and sew the neckline together all the way around. Cut in the seam allowances, turn right side out and press the neckline.

Ties

Lay the narrow strips of fabric right sides together, fold in the middle. Sew the short and long fabric edges together. Turn right side out, iron.

Side panel with binding tape

Lay the side pieces (B+C) right sides together and sew the armholes together. Place the binding tape from the inside, directly under the armhole seam.

Sew the sides together. Turn right side out and press.

Ruffle

Fold the ruffle in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, iron and gather. Make sure that the first 2-3 cm remain smooth. This will make it easier to sew the ruffle on later.

Pin the ruffle to the middle section (A+D) of the dress. The fold line of the ruffle points towards the neckline. You can topstitch the ruffle on first with an auxiliary seam close to the edge.

Pin the side piece (B+C) to the middle piece with the ruffle (A+D) and sew together.

Skirt section

Finish the skirt piece. Place the hem on the marking on the inside (right sides facing) and sew on both sides (only the hem height) in the sewing foot width. Turn the hem right side out. Shape the corners with a pencil. Press and topstitch the hem and side seams.

Gather the skirt piece to the width of the front and back pieces.

Pin the skirt piece to the outer fabric of the front piece and sew together. The seam will automatically move upwards and “disappear” into the top.

Repeat the same at the back.

Fold the seam allowances of the inner sections inwards and topstitch in place either by hand or with the sewing machine.

We hope you enjoy sewing!

Fabric suggestions

We made the dress from the beautiful double gauze. Muslin - THE fabric that summer is made of!
Lightweight cotton fabrics, poplin or sweet checks would also be a good choice for this cute little dress. The entire top is lined with the same fabric. If you want to make the dress for summer, you can also use a light batiste fabric in the same color.
